Moving into an aged care home

Confirm the room, arrival time and furniture allowed before booking the move. Keep care, medication and personal transport arrangements separate from AA’s furniture-moving scope.

Before booking

Start with the room and the home’s moving process.

The resident, family and aged care home should agree on the move-in arrangements before the furniture booking is treated as fixed.

Confirm the place and date

Wait until the room offer and move-in date are confirmed. For a move between aged care homes, confirm the new room before giving notice and coordinate the date with both providers.

Ask what is already provided

My Aged Care says rooms generally include essential furniture. Ask for a written list of what is in this particular room and what personal furniture or electrical items may be brought in.

Measure before choosing furniture

Record the room, doorway and lift dimensions. Check where a favourite chair, cabinet, television or small desk could safely fit without blocking staff access or mobility equipment.

Book the arrival window

Ask the home for its preferred day and time, legal truck position, entry, lift, loading area and on-site contact. My Aged Care suggests asking for a quieter arrival time so staff have more time to help the resident settle.

Inventory decisions

Only move what belongs in the new room.

Photograph and list the furniture selected for the room, then separate everything else before moving day. Mark items going to family, storage, sale, donation or another address; only locations and work confirmed in AA’s written quote form part of the move.

Measure furniture rather than relying on labels such as “small chair”. Tell AA about glass, artwork, mobility equipment, unusually heavy pieces and anything needing dismantling. Confirm with the home whether electrical equipment requires inspection or tagging before use.

Personal support

Keep care arrangements outside the furniture load.

A family member, friend or carer can support the resident on moving day. Decide who will travel with them, carry personal essentials and meet the aged care home manager. AA’s enquiry covers the furniture work described in the written quote; it does not arrange personal care, medication management or passenger transport.

Keep identification, medication, health and care documents, valuables, phones, chargers, keys and the first day’s clothing with the responsible person. Do not pack them into furniture cartons or the truck.

Provide the exact address, inventory, stairs or lift, closest legal truck position and the person authorised to identify what is moving.

Delivery

Provide the aged care home’s address, room or wing, arrival window, loading instructions, lift dimensions and on-site contact.

Other destinations

List family delivery, storage or another stop separately. Extra stops and services depend on availability and must be included in the written quote.

Common questions

Does an aged care room already contain furniture?

My Aged Care says aged care rooms generally include essential furniture, but each home can differ. Ask what is in the particular room and what personal furniture is permitted before building the moving inventory.

Can AA transport medication and care documents?

Keep medication, identification, care documents, valuables and first-day essentials with the resident or their support person, not in the furniture load.

Can AA move belongings to more than one address?

Include every proposed destination in the enquiry. The team will assess the route, work and availability, then state any accepted stops in the written quote.

Does AA arrange personal care or transport for the resident?

No. Arrange the resident’s care, medication support and passenger transport separately. AA’s role is limited to the furniture-moving work confirmed in writing.
