Items to separate before moving day

Gas cylinders, fuel, household chemicals and some personal items need a separate plan. Keep them out of ordinary moving cartons until you have checked the current guidance and AA has confirmed what can be accepted for your move.

Before packing

Make a separate “check first” group.

Do this while you build the inventory, not when the truck arrives.

Gas bottles and cylinders

Do not hide a cylinder inside a carton or furniture. Record the type, size, quantity and condition, then ask AA whether it can be included or needs another arrangement.

Fuel and powered equipment

List any fuel, mower, generator or fuel-powered tool. Do not assume fuel or equipment containing fuel can go with the furniture load; discuss it before the quote is confirmed.

Chemicals and aerosols

Set aside paint products, bleach, pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents, oils and aerosols. Keep original labels where possible and use current government or council advice for storage and disposal.

Keep-with-you items

Put medication, keys, identity documents, jewellery, wallets, chargers and anything needed immediately into a clearly separate bag that stays with you.

Victorian guidance

Use the right disposal path.

The Victorian Government’s Detox Your Home guidance says hazardous household chemicals should not go in rubbish bins or down drains. Its accepted-item list includes fuels, pesticides, pool chemicals, aerosols and several solvents, with conditions that can change by item and event.

Gas bottles and cylinders have different arrangements. The government page says ordinary gas bottles and cylinders are not accepted by the program, while some propane cylinders require pre-approval. Check that page and your council for the current option that matches the item.

Never mix or decant chemicals to prepare for a move or disposal event. Follow the product label and the receiving facility’s instructions.
