Moving plants interstate

Plants, soil, seeds and plant material can be subject to interstate quarantine rules. Check every item against the destination rules before it is packed, then ask AA whether the permitted items can be included in your proposed furniture move.

Before you pack

Identify the plant and the material travelling with it.

Do not treat every pot plant as ordinary household furniture.

Write a plant list

Record the plant name if known, the number of pots and whether each item includes soil, potting mix, seeds, fruit, flowers or other plant material.

Check the destination

Use the current state or territory entry information for the exact item. Rules can differ by destination, plant species, origin and material attached to the plant.

Separate uncertain items

Keep anything that has not been cleared by the relevant authority out of the furniture load. Do not assume cleaning, removing soil or repotting makes an item acceptable.

Confirm the moving scope

Tell AA which permitted plants you want moved, including their dimensions, pot material and approximate weight. Wait for written confirmation before treating them as part of the load.

Interstate quarantine applies within Australia.

The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry explains that pests, diseases and weeds can spread between regions through plants, plant products, soil and equipment. It directs travellers to check the restrictions that apply before leaving.

Western Australia example

Some destinations require item-by-item checks.

Quarantine WA says propagatable plants and plant products must be permitted and meet the applicable import requirements. Its traveller guidance also says empty plant pots must be cleaned of soil, potting mix and plant material, declared and presented for inspection.

This is an example of why a general “household plant” label is not enough. Check the live requirement for each item and keep the result with your moving notes.

What this guide confirms

Government permission and transport acceptance are separate checks.

A plant being permitted under quarantine rules does not automatically confirm that AA can transport it. Space, stability, moisture, pot condition, handling risk, route and the agreed transport arrangement still need assessment.

Can I move pot plants interstate?
