Apartment move planning

Melbourne apartment moving checklist

An apartment move depends on more than the furniture list. Check the building rules, permitted moving hours, lift and loading arrangements at both properties, then share the details with AA before the crew and timing are confirmed.

Start with both buildings

Ask for the moving procedure in writing.

Collection and delivery buildings can have different contacts, access windows and booking conditions.

01

Contact the building manager

Ask who approves furniture moves and what information they require. Keep the manager or owners-corporation contact details with your moving notes.

02

Check the building rules

Ask for the current rules affecting furniture through common property, lift use, loading areas, noise, floor protection and moving hours. Do not assume the procedure at one building applies to the other.

03

Confirm what must be booked

Check whether you need a service lift, loading bay, loading-dock induction, access key or building representative. Record the available time window and booking reference.

04

Coordinate with AA

Share the available building times before accepting the moving scope. A preferred lift or loading slot is not an AA booking confirmation.

Victorian owners-corporation rules

Common-property rules can affect the move.

Consumer Affairs Victoria says all owners corporations have rules covering the control, management, use or enjoyment of common property and lots. It also lists moving furniture and other objects through common property as a subject an owners corporation can regulate where other users are affected.

Ask for the rules that apply to your building and follow its booking process. AA can use the information to assess the job, but the building’s permission and conditions remain separate from the moving quote.

Measure the route

Check the lift, doors and carrying distance.

Record the service-lift door opening, internal width, depth and height, and the stated load limit. Measure apartment doors and identify tight corridors, turns, ramps and steps. If the lift cannot take a bulky item, do not assume the stairs are a suitable alternative—show the route to AA for assessment.

Describe the legal truck position, loading-dock height restrictions and the distance from the vehicle to the lift or apartment. Photos of the loading area, lift opening and tight turns help explain the access.

Complete inventory

Include everything outside the apartment rooms.

Apartment contents

List furniture, appliances and cartons. Flag pieces that may not fit through the lift or apartment doorway and anything requiring dismantling or special assessment.

Storage and parking areas

Include storage-cage contents, bicycles, shelves, boxes and belongings in a basement, balcony or allocated car space. Explain how the crew reaches each area.

Keys and handover timing

Record when keys, lift access and the loading area become available. Tell AA about settlement, lease handover or building time limits before the moving date is agreed.

Common questions

Do I book the lift before the removalists?

First obtain the building’s available windows, then discuss them with AA. Confirm both the AA booking and the building booking before relying on the time.

What if the building has no loading bay?

Show the nearest legal truck position, entrance and carrying distance. The team can assess the access and account for it in the proposed scope.

Should I include my storage cage?

Yes. List every item in the storage cage, basement, balcony and car-park area, and explain the access to each location.

Can I start an enquiry before the lift is booked?

Yes. Share the building name, contact, likely windows and what still needs confirmation. The final scope and timing should reflect the approved access.
