Separate the child-care plan from the furniture-moving plan. Decide who will supervise the children, what they need with them and when their room will be ready, then give AA the access and timing details needed for the furniture move.

Before moving day

Make the change understandable and practical.

Children will respond differently. Keep plans age-appropriate and leave room for questions.

Talk about the move early

Explain what will change and what will stay familiar. Raising Children Network recommends discussing a school move well in advance where possible and giving children a chance to express what they are looking forward to or worried about.

Give them a small role

Let a child choose labels, pack a box of non-fragile belongings or decide which familiar items should be ready first. Keep important documents and anything irreplaceable with an adult.

Confirm school or childcare

Tell the current and new service about the move and ask what records, dates and transition arrangements are required. Do not assume a change of address automatically transfers enrolment.

Plan the first evening

Choose the beds, linen, night lights, comfort items and bathroom supplies that must be accessible first. Mark those cartons clearly and keep a simple meal and bedtime plan.

Moving-day supervision

Keep children out of the carrying route.

Arrange a responsible adult or suitable off-site care before the crew arrives. If children remain at the property, keep them in a supervised area away from open doors, stairs, driveways, the truck and the path used to carry furniture.

Tell the crew which room or area must remain closed, but do not rely on the removal team for child supervision. The supervising adult should keep medication, food, drinks and personal essentials with them, not in the furniture load.

At delivery, check that entrances, windows, gates and any balcony access are secure before children enter the main moving area.

School changes in Victoria

Contact the schools before relying on an address.

Victorian government guidance says every child is guaranteed a place at their designated neighbourhood school, while enrolment at another government school depends on available accommodation and the placement policy. A school may ask for documents showing the child’s permanent address.

For a transfer between Victorian government schools, contact the current and proposed schools about acceptance, dates and the information they need. The schools manage the formal transfer of student information after the child has been accepted.

Fit the furniture move around the family plan.

Timing limits

Share school, childcare, key handover or settlement times that affect access. A preferred time is a request until the moving arrangements are confirmed.

Priority rooms

Identify beds, cots and other furniture that should be accessible first. Include dismantling or assembly requests in the enquiry so they can be assessed in the written scope.

Access boundaries

Tell AA about a room, gate or route that must stay closed and where the supervising adult and children will be. Keep that area clear of furniture assigned to the load.

Common questions

Can children stay at home while the furniture is moved?

Plan active supervision by a responsible adult and keep children away from open doors, stairs, driveways, the truck and the carrying path. Off-site care may be easier where practical. AA staff are not responsible for child supervision.

What should stay out of the truck?

Keep medication, food, drinks, nappies, comfort items, school or childcare records, identification and first-night essentials with the responsible adult.

Does moving address automatically transfer a Victorian school enrolment?

No. Contact the current and proposed schools. Placement, proof-of-address and transfer processes depend on the school and the Victorian enrolment policy.

What family details does AA need?

Share timing restrictions, the supervising area, access boundaries and priority furniture. AA will confirm only the furniture-moving work included in the written quote.
